Has anyone had Norplant before? what's it like?

i'm turning 17 soon, so my mom is taking me to the dr next week to get Norplant. we were supposed to do it when i turned 16, but we put it off and now i have a bf so my mom wants it done now. i know it's a birth control, it goes under the skin and lasts like 5 yrs or something. but what exactly is it and where/how do they put it under your skin? are there any side effects of it? i know some birth control pills cause weight gain/can help clear skin/etc.

I never used it - use depo shots which only need every 3 mos. But a friend used norplant and it caused SEVERE acne, plus she said it was uncomfortable. But the worst problem was when 5 yrs was up and it needed to come up she had moved, and no other doctor would remove it, everyone told her would only remove if they inserted it, so she had to travel several states to have original doc. remove it. Something to think of, who knows where you'll be in 5 yrs. There are many good birth control options out there, I'd talk to your doctor before deciding on 1, there are pros and cons to all of them.
