Is lead from a pencil harmful to children?

What is it gets under their skin? A friends Child (who is 8) was stuck with a lead pencil and the lead broke off under her skin. They got the lead out; however the next day their was a rash forming. When they took her to urgent care they were told it was ringworm? Could the lead have caused the continuing to worsen rash??

even though it says lead, most pencils aren't usually 100% lead (for this reason). When she was stuck, bacteria and germs may have entered the skin at the same time. If she went to the urgent care and they weren't worried, you shouldn't be either. If they thought it was a reaction to the lead they would have done blood testing as well as other testing. I really wouldn't worry about anything.

yes. very.
Reply:Pencil lead is clay and carbon, not lead, and is harmless (unless you are stabbed with it of coarse). Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, probably not directly related to the injury. However, the kid good have gotten an infection such a strep or staph that might look like ringworm. If the rash doesn't get better the child should be reevaluated.
Reply:Not lead, graphite
Reply:Lead is not used in pencils. They use graphite. The problem could very well be an infection, but there would not be lead poisoning.
Reply:As others have pointed out, pencil lead is not lead at all. I still have a bluish mark on my leg where i was accidentally poked with pencil lead as a child. I'm 30 now and it has never bothered me.
