What is this bump on my dogs belly?

My dog had two bumps on his belly right under his rib cage. They were not bumps on the outside of the skin but under his skin. They were about the size of a pea. The vet took a sample of the fluids and said it looked like an allergic reaction to a thorn or something that had pierced his belly and the body had not yet absorbed it. the other bump was were his umbilical cord should be and the vet said it could be a herniated umbilical cord..... She gave me two medicines to give to him (children's benedryl and amoxicillin trihydrate/clavulanate potassium or Clavamox). I have been giving him these medicines. One of the bumps is succesfully dissappearing but the other turned reddish/purple on the outer part of the skin in the form of a blister and recently popped forming an open sore. He will not stop licking it and I am not sure if I should take him back to the vet right now?

Can anyone tell me what this is or what is happening? Thanks... 10 points to the best answer....

An umbilical hernia wouldn't sore up and pop.

Clavamox is simply a form of amoxicillian. It will help to stop an infection if your dog has an embedded twig or thorn. Sometimes those work out themselves, but often they have to be removed by your vet. If they stay in they are repeated sources of infection. It wouldn't hurt to put some antibiotic salve on any open sore and give your vet a call about it. It might simply be where the foreign object is working its way out.

You shouldn't breed a dog with an umbilical hernia, so you can simply have that repaired when your pet is altered. It runs an extra 35 dollars or so.

I wanted to add that this isn't an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. Dogs get hives if they are allergic just like humans do. They piloerect and their little ears get red and they actually develop hives under their fur. In a very severe reaction they will even wheeze.

it might be an allergic reaction to the medicine, or just a side effect. i'd check with the vet because if it was a side effect, it might just go away, but if it was an allergic reaction, it might make the bump even worse or get infected. best wishes :)
Reply:Which bump is gone and which still remains??

If the unbilical one is now ozzing than I would take the dog back to be seen. since the dog is now licking it and you can't seem to stop it then he could cause himself a even bigger infection by his licking it so much.

I'd take the dog back and have the vet look at it and see if further treatment is needed.

I'm always on the side of better safe than sorry!
Reply:Well I know this may not be the best thing to refer to but, well like a zit it got clogged and so popped. However u should take him to the vet. and while ur there u should get a cone. i know it may seem cruel but trust me he wont leave it alone and may make things even worse.
